The Monroe City Panthers traveled out of town this past week to compete in the Clopton Tournament. The Panthers wasted no time adding another First Place Tournament to their record as the obtained victory against Van-Far on January 12, winning the tournament with a score of 57-43.
The first quarter of the Championship game started with C.E. Talton wasting no time to add points to maintain a lead against the Van-Far Indians. Talton made two 3-point shots and was responsible for 12 of the 14 points made.
The second quarter continued with Blake Hays swishing two 3-pointers, followed by Logan Buhlig adding a 3-point shot as well. The Panthers worked together as a team offensively and defensively to secure the first half as they entered half-time with the lead.
Head Coach Brock Edris commented stating, “Going into the game we expected that the game was going to be much closer than our 1st meeting. Playing Van-Far at Clopton was almost like playing an away game in itself because all of those teams are from the EMO conference. Three-fourths of the gym were in support of Van-Far. Fortunately, we came out early in the game attacking their 3-2 zone defense and played solid defense to give ourselves a 10-point lead going into halftime 31-21.”
After halftime, the Panthers continued to play a determined game of basketball to take home the victory trophy.
