The Monroe City High School Athletic department added a new sport for students to participate in for the 2019-20 season. The new Cross-Country Panther team has taken the foot race in a fast-paced direction. The first-year team consists of 11 athletes including: William Ball, Lexie Birt, Alivia Chinn, Kaleb Griffin, Kabott Harlan, Bailey Hays, Lauren Smith, Shawn Terrill, Hannah Wheeler, Jackson Wheeler and Emmalee Williams.

The Cross-Country team opened their season on September 3 in Salisbury. The girls team finished the meet in second place, with Hays finishing third place, Williams finishing fifth place and Hannah Wheeler crossing the line in sixteenth place.

The next meet was held on September 7, traveling to Mexico. Both the boys and girls team placed sixth overall. Hays crossed the finished line in fourth place, with Williams just behind her in fifth place finish out of 66 runners. Griffin ended the race in fifteenth place out of 78 runners competing.

The team traveled to Palmyra on September 14. The girls team ran the race finishing second as a team with Hays in fourth, Williams in fifth and Hannah Wheeler in eleventh. The boys team had three qualifying finishes with Griffin in twelfth, Harlan in seventeenth and Ball in twentieth.

The Quincy Notre Dame brought some tough competition on September 17, but the Cross-Country Lady Panthers still managed to finish strong ending the meet in seventh place as a team. Hays finished in thirteenth place, followed by Williams in fifteenth place.

On September 21, the Cross-Country runners traveled to Fulton to compete in a huge meet. The girls team ended the race in seventh overall, with the boys finishing in fourteenth. Hays finished in eleventh place and Williams finished in fourteenth.

To catch the next meet, the Cross-Country team will be traveling to Moberly High School on October 3.
