The Monroe City Varsity Softball team won the Class 2 District 5 Championship on October 19 against Bowling Green in Montgomery County. This makes the second district championship title since 2016. The Lady Panthers were able to end the game in the lead with a score of 8-5. Head Coach Melissa Chinn stated, “It was such an amazing win!! We were very confident going into that game that Bowling Green was beatable. With that mentality, the girls just did their thing.”

Named to the All-District Team were six Monroe City athletes. Those receiving All-District First Team were: Riley Quinn, Pitcher; Bailee Hays, Catcher; Lauren Youngblood, Infield; Danielle Pfanner, Infield; Carly Youngblood, Outfield; and All-District Second Team Emily Freidank.

The District Championship game started with the Lady Panthers taking the lead in the first two innings with a run made in each inning, bringing the score to 2-0 in the top of the third. Bowling Green stepped up to bat in the bottom of the third inning making two runs, tying the score. During the fourth inning Monroe City was able to hold Bowling Green from scoring, as likewise was Bowling Green able to hold the Lady Panthers from making it around the bases.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Bowling Green would cross home plate giving them a one point lead over Monroe City, but not for long. The Lady Panthers rallied their team in the top of the sixth, finding a way to take the lead and gain 4 runs, giving Monroe City a score of 6-3 and holding Bowling Green from scoring in the bottom of the sixth. The seventh inning added another two runs for Monroe City and despite Bowling Green’s efforts with two more runs, the Lady Panthers were able to hold Bowling Green making Monroe City the Class 2 District 5 Champions with a winning score of 8-5.

Riley Quinn led the Lady Panthers pitching seven innings with three strike-outs and 1 RBI. Belle Clark added 2 hits and 2 RBI’s, along with Bailee Hays adding 2 RBI’s and Danielle Pfanner having 2 hits.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Panthers entered District play against Montgomery County on October 17, winning the game 6-2. Monroe City took the early lead in the first inning and continued ahead of Montgomery County the entire game. Quinn pitched a seven-inning game with 11 strike-outs, 3 hits and 2 RBI’s. Moss added 2 hits and 2 RBI’s.

The Lady Panthers will host Palmyra on October 23 at 6 p.m., in a Sectional contest.
