MCPD takes suspect into custody for possible attempted child abduction, after receiving a call from children who were being chased.

Update: On Thursday, May 30, Officers received a report of an attempted child abduction on Oak Street near St. Jude Cemetery at approximately 3:30 p.m. It was reported three teenage females were walking and began being chased by two males in an older model maroon Jeep with a rag top. They described the driver wearing a black ball cap and black sleeveless shirt. They advised they ran through the cemetery with the Jeep following on the roads. Neither the driver nor passenger ever got out of the vehicle on foot. the victims could not identify the passenger.

While speaking with the victims, they identified a male subject walking and immediately identified him as the passenger of the Jeep. Officers took the subject into custody for questioning, however released him a short time later after the victims retracted identification stating that person was not the him.

If anyone has any information regarding the vehicle or subjects operating it, please call 573-735-4411. Information on this incident has been forwarded to surrounding agencies and Officers will be patrolling the neighborhoods. The Police Department has contacted the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) to help with the victims.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., the Monroe City Police Department responded to a possible attempted child abduction near St. Jude’s Cemetery and Oak Street.

Children reported being chased by a white male, described as wearing a black shirt and black shorts. The caller stated the person of interest was seen running into the St. Jude’s Cemetery, and later seen getting into a marron Jeep with possible out of state plates.

Officers immediately began searching the area, and after a short time located the suspect near Farmer’s Elevator. At this time a suspect was taken into custody.
