We're always interested in hearing about news in our community. Let us know what's going on!

I was brought up with much Democratic influence.  That being said, I feel the Democratic Party as I knew it, is no longer the same party.  It seemed when I was young, listening to many conversations of politics had by my Grandfather, David L. Utterback, I “knew” that all hard working farmers…

Your early 20’s are a strange time. Old enough to know better but young enough to not really know how to do it right.

You know what’s great?  Living in a small town.  Not only living here, but growing up here. When I was a little girl, at six years old I rode my bike (up hill both ways) to the swimming pool from Oak Street, alone… and swam from noon till 5 p.m.  My Aunt and I would play in the creek and I w…

Stumped on what to write about this weekend I looked back at my column from this time last year. It began like this, “In small towns there is no such thing as a stranger, everyone knows everyone else.” Now through Pokémon Go and the Monroe City Rocks I think community is coming even closer t…

Praise the Lord for the much needed rain we are receiving here lately.   Before a rain you may notice little signs like the leaves of corn plants in a field reaching high to the sky in preparation of relief from the heat and dry temperatures of summer.  You may also notice the leaves of tree…

One night after work last week I was sitting on the couch at my parent’s house when the door opened. To my surprise I see my brother walk in and ask if I wanted to go fishing on Route J Reservoir with him in the canoe. I leapt at the chance to spend some time on the water and the afternoon w…

As I reflect back on the 4th of July holiday here in town, I can not help being proud.  We live in an outstanding community.

Last week I wrote about the trifecta of fireworks this year; while I only made it to the displays at the Mark Twain Lake Rodeo and my grandparent’s house I did catch a glimpse of the Monroe City fireworks outside my window Monday night.  It occurred to me that this is the first year that I h…

As a pre-teen, I really wanted to be in 4-H.  I had friends who were, and I envied the fair time they had and the cool art projects that their parents helped them with.

The Fourth of July brings with it the excitement of fireworks displays and we are in a prime location to ‘get the most bang for our buck,’ so to speak.

On my quest to play every golf course in the area this summer I can check the first one off my list. Last Friday the temperature dipped slightly and I seized the opportunity to play nine holes at Mosswood Meadows; it was on the sixth hole, covered in sweat I realized maybe the cooler tempera…

Recently I had a long conversation with a wise gentleman whom I look up to.  We spoke of the past, we spoke of the future.  We spoke of loved ones, though not directly, we both knew what the other meant.  With a mist of tear in our eyes we had a deep conversation.  While listening to him spe…

I have only been on a plane once before and I was very young so remember little of the trip. As I took off from St. Louis on my trip down to Texas I gawked out of the window (I made sure to book a seat by the window for this very reason) at the cars and city below me. To see life scuttle ben…

The Monroe City Post Office would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s National Letter Carrier Food Drive a success. It could not have been done without you.

If before this week you were not patriotic,  didn’t feel compelled to thank a soldier or become a volunteer just take another look at our front page.

Each week brings with it new challenges, or the possibility for new surprises. By the time these papers have cooled on the stands I will be on a plane headed for Texas. A little get away for a few days; I’m not exactly sure what to expect, but I was told to bring a pair of swim trunks.

This Years ago (1916-1956) should have been in the May 25 issue of The Lake Gazette. The 50 year ago Monroe City News had it for the week of June 16, 1956. Sorry for the mix-up.

“The Barry Toons on page three looks like it may be out of link.”  Nathan said as we were finishing up this week.

I’m sure everyone has something that reminds them of summer, the day on the lake spent fishing you look foreword to every year, the smell of fresh cut grass or the sound of children splashing in the pool.

The gratitude I have towards our community is great.  Monroe City is second to none when it comes to those in need.

With the promise of summer on the horizon I started thinking about what I wanted to do this summer, a “bucket list,” if you will.

I am not sure where to start this week.  The past few days have been some of the most tragic moments of my life.  It has been heart wrenching watching my family endure the heart ache of losing a loved one, a child, grandson, nephew, cousin and brother.

“The day is what you make of it. You can have a good day or a bad day.” I heard this recently and it really stuck with me.

This area is blessed to have Dr. Monica Otto for a veterinarian. She is one of the most caring vets I have had the pleasure to associate with, making every effort possible to see that area pets receive the best care available.  Through her efforts, Dr. Otto has nearly eliminated the feral or…

I had the opportunity to make a really fun call last night, I felt a little like Pat Sajak.  Giving away a vacation was fun stuff!  (Go to page 12 and read the story before you go on…)

Sitting at my grandparent’s home Saturday my grandpa asked me if I had done any fishing. I replied that I hadn’t had time to get to the lake and cast out a line. He chuckled to himself and said someone once told him that when work gets into to way of fishing… it is time to quit work.

It has been a busy past few weeks here at the office.  We are working on a skeleton crew, however we are making our way each week to a new edition, (not without a few mistakes here and there, after all we are human).

This week’s issue made me really happy, whenever we have pieces from the children in school I always get a kick out of reading what they have to say. Many of the children said they loved their mom because she cooks good food or pays bills so they can watch TV.

“April showers bring May flowers.” But I wonder do April showers bring morel mushrooms?

The front pages this weeks makes my heart happy.  Five best friends doing what they love and being successful together.  Often times we forget how blessed we are to have those steadfast relationships in our lives.
