A potential Clarence Cannon Conference championship will be on the line Friday when Monroe City takes on Macon. Kickoff at Lankford Field is 7 p.m.
With two conference games remaining on the schedule, the winner of the Panthers-Tigers tilt will have a one-game lead atop the CCC standings heading into its regular-season finale next week. MCHS will host Clark County while Macon entertains Centralia. CHS (6-1, 4-1) is one game back of the Panthers and Tigers.
Monroe City (7-0, 5-0) remains the top-ranked Class 1 team in the state after last week’s 58-22 road demolition of Brookfield.
The 22 points allowed was the most the Panthers have yielded in a game this season.
Macon (7-0, 5-0) was No. 7 in Class 2, prior to last week’s 40-26 win at South Shelby. The Tigers roared in the second half of that contest. Macon trailed the Cardinals 20-14 at halftime. Macon’s defense has been fairly stingy this season. South Shelby’s 26 points is the most the Tigers have given up to date.
Macon is enjoying its success under the leadership of first-year head coach Van Vanatta, who spent the previous five seasons at Columbia Rock Bridge.
The Tigers program appears to have some stability after playing for two different head coaches a year ago.
Against Brookfield, Monroe City’s Waylon DeGrave and Ceaton Pennewell combined for 278 yards rushing. DeGrave and Pennewell each had 18 carries, DeGrave for 163 yards and Pennewell for 115.
Quarterback Reece Buhlig passed for 102 yards.
The Panthers opened the game with an 11-play, 90-yard drive that chewed up almost half of the first quarter. DeGrave scored a three-yard touchdown and Pennewell drove in a two-point conversion to put MCHS up 8-0, and the Panthers didn’t really ever have to look back.
Later, with 17 seconds remaining in the first half and Monroe City leading 30-14, DeGrave scored a 59-yard TD followed by Pennewell’s successful two-point attempt.
