Monroe City’s post-game anthem is actor Taron Egerton’s version of Elton John’s original 1983 classic hit “I’m Still Standing.”
“Some guys played it one day in school,” defensive tackle Landan Holland said. “They brought it into the locker room and we’ve been rockin’ with it ever since.”
The Panthers are still standing after rockin’ South Shelby 52-18 in the Class 1 District 6 championship game Friday, Nov. 11 at Lankford Field.
MCHS secured its second consecutive district title and berth in the state quarterfinals.
The Panthers will host Lincoln on Saturday at 1 p.m. Due to a MSHSAA mandate, digital tickets are required.
Monroe City (12-0) attacked South Shelby quickly – as in center Landin Friday’s first snap.
Waylon DeGrave dashed for a 67-yard touchdown, followed by a Cameron Jones two-point conversion. MCHS led 8-0 – 16 seconds into the game.
“I don’t think I even got touched,” DeGrave said. “The line did a great job on that play.”
It was not the start Cardinals third-year head coach Adam Gunterman expected.
“Anytime you allow a first-play touchdown to the No. 1 team in the state, it’s hard to come back from,” Gunterman said outside the visitor’s locker room.
DeGrave finished the night with 222 yards on 12 carries and four touchdowns.
The Panthers led 38-6 at halftime having gained 332 yards of total offense … all on the ground. In the end, MCHS finished with 445 yards rushing.
Monroe City went up 14-0 midway through the first quarter on Ceaton Pennewell’s 1-yard TD. With 1:40 left, Jones ripped off a 73-yard touchdown run. DeGrave added two. By the time the game was over, Jones had five rushes for 100 yards.
MCHS pushed its advantage to 30-0 early in the second quarter on a 19-yard DeGrave TD and Jones conversion. One minute later, Pennewell scooped and scored a 25-yard touchdown off a South Shelby fumbled QB-RB pitch exchange. DeGrave ran for two more and a 38-0 Panthers lead.
Cardinals quarterback Trey Countryman threw a fourth-down 12-yard scoring pass to PJ Schmidt late in the half. MCHS had previously thwarted four-of-five South Shelby fourth-down conversion attempts.
“They were flying around,” head coach David Kirby said of the Panthers defense. “We understood the sticks and we knew what we could give up and what we couldn’t. I thought they really stepped up to the plate.”
South Shelby put together a 12-play, 64-yard drive to open the third quarter capped by Kendal Hammond’s 19-yard TD run.
Monroe City pushed ahead 44-12 four seconds into the fourth quarter on a three-yard DeGrave plunge. DeGrave sped off for a 50-yard touchdown four minutes later. Quincy Mayfield snared quarterback Reece Buhlig’s two-point pass giving the Panthers a 52-12 advantage. South Shelby scored again late in the game.
MCHS will face another group of Cardinals next. Lincoln (11-1) defeated Benton County rival Cole Camp 38-20. The two communities south of Sedalia are 10 miles apart. Had Cole Camp won, Monroe City would have traveled to play the Bluebirds.
South Shelby ended the season 8-4 – two seasons removed from finishing 0-8. Gunterman believes his Cardinals’ future is full of flight.
“Our JV team went undefeated; our junior high team went 5-1. We’re building a great program here and it started with the seniors we have right now,” Gunterman said. “Them as sophomores were thrown into a bad spot and had to play a lot of minutes that a lot of them probably weren’t ready for.
“I can’t say enough about how proud I am of those guys on building our program to where it is now,” Gunterman added.
