On December 16, MU Health Care recognized Jackie Ryan with a certificate of award for a Yes Moment. The Yes Moment award is given for individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to living The Culture of Yes and for going above and beyond in pursuit of the mission to save and improve lives.
In 2017, Jackie Ryan was assigned the responsibility to develop and coordinate the ECMO program along with other key members from around the MU Healthcare system. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, replaces the function of the heart and lungs. ECMO is helping some COVID-19 patients for whom standard treatments have failed and a mechanical ventilator alone is not enough to safely support their breathing.
Ryan helped develop a polished ECMO team with regular meetings, debriefings, and training/certification sessions. This allowed our ECMO team to be prepared for an average number of ECMO patients a facility of our size would see in a month.
In 2020, COVID-19 brought drastic increase to the number of patients requiring ECMO and with it, an onslaught of difficult challenges and opportunities to improve. MU Health Care stated, “Jackie worked tirelessly to make sure that these critical COVID-19 patients had adequate ECMO specialists for every shift.” Ryan frequently communicated and coordinated with both nursing and Respiratory therapy ECMO specialists to provide support and feedback.
Ryan would check the schedule daily and make the necessary changes when challenges arose. “Jackie would routinely check on her ECMO specialists in MICU and provide them with frequent breaks throughout their shifts and she is always a text or phone call away to provide unparalleled support for the ECMO team. Jackie has spent numerous shifts as the ECMO specialist in MICU because of short staffing situations. She has worked feverishly with her ECMO team members to rapidly develop MICU ECMO specialists for the increased in Pulmonary ECMO Patients. Jackie has fulfilled the role of a full time CMO coordinator while carrying out her other duties/responsibilities as a Service Line Specialist for the Cardiovascular Service Line,” added MU Health Care.
Ryan is a hometown native of Monroe City, residing in Columbia. She is the daughter of Donnie Wayne and Marie Hays. She is married to Gary Ryan, together they have two children. Ryan holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Biology, along with a Masters of Science in Kinesiology with emphasis in Sports Medicine.
