REGINA MARIE HAYS

Regina Marie Hays, 95, of Monroe City, MO passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025, surrounded by her family. She lived a long and fulfilled life, and is remembered for her strength, love of life, and was a mentor to many.
Regina was the fifth child of Martin T. & Rose B. (Adam) Williams, born on September 15, 1929. She married John Hays of Monroe City, MO May 9, 1950.
A graduate of St. Stephens High School in Indian Creek, Regina was active in the choir and band. She continued her love of all things music as an organist and pianist for the Holy Rosary parish for over 50 years. Being a long-time member of the Monroe City Singers brought her immense joy.
Regina was very active in both her community and her parish. A faithful Catholic, her devotion and prayer life were a constant source of inspiration. She shared her gift of music at masses, funerals, and weddings. She was a dedicated member and EMT for the Monroe City Ambulance District, and volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program through the Nutrition Center. Alongside many of her M&M gals, Regina gave several years of service to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In recognition of her lifelong dedication to helping others, Regina was honored with a Community Service Award.
One of Regina’s favorite pastimes was playing cards, especially when there was money involved. Regina loved a spirited game of poker, euchre, and pitch with friends and family. Regina’s house was always open, whether it was just for a visit, to play cards, or share a meal. It tended to be the gathering place where all felt welcome, and which served especially meaningful in Regina’s later years. Another favorite activity was a good game of golf. With a unique field of vision, she’d always tell her boys and Johnny, “Don’t line me up!” No truer words, as she was a pretty good putter.
Regina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings Loretta, Tom, Margaret Jane, Rosalie, JoePaul, Jim, Betty, and grandson Seth. She is survived by her seven children: Keith (BettyAnn) Hays, Karen (Davy) Benson, Janet (Ron) Geist, Donna (Phil) Thompson, Steve (Nancy) Hays – all of Monroe City, Angela (Bob) Lawler of Columbia, and Brian (Tracy) Hays of New London, as well as 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
After the passing of her beloved husband, Regina lived another 15 years with courage and humility. During those years, she continued to serve her community, deepen her faith, and cherish the company of her children, grands, greats, and friends. Later in life, Regina faced physical hardships, which she handled with the utmost grace and dignity, and was a positive inspiration to many.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 11, 2025 from 4:00-8:00 pm at Holy Rosary Church, with a Rosary to be recited at 3:45 pm. A Scripture service will be held at 7:30 pm.
