It was laughter and smiles entering the room at the Nutrition Center on April 5 as the OATS held a celebration for National Volunteer Month. The celebration was held in appreciation for all the OATS Bus Volunteers and all the roles that are helped with throughout the year.
Monroe County Volunteer of the year was awarded to two local ladies this year. The first was Margaret Hays, who has been a volunteer for OATS for more than 30 years. She was honored for all the help she has given with bake sales, garage sales, the white elephant sale. Hays stated, “I enjoyed all the trips we took, we went everywhere and had such good times, it’s such a good organization. I enjoyed all the people and encourage others to join and volunteer”. She sat and shared about trips to Nashville, TN and Kansas.
The second awarded was Margaret Dean, who has also been with OATS over 30 years. She has been a member of the committee, helped with fundraising and rode the bus in the bus match program. Dean stated, “Everyone liked my chicken salad and I would bring that” as all those around shook their head in agreement. She added, “I still wouldn’t be able to get out if it wasn’t for OATS”.
