Richard J. Adam of Monroe City died Sept. 9 at Monroe Manor at the age of 89. Richard was born Oct. 14, 1925 to Adolph Peter and Anna Elizabeth Montgomery Adam at Indian Creek. He was
married to Lorena A. (Rusty) Farnan on Aug. 12, 1946 in Holy Family Catholic Church at Conception Junction, MO. They recently celebrated their 69 wedding anniversary.
Adam graduated St. Stephens High School in Indian Creek in 1943. He joined the Air Force in January of 1944 and attended Michigan State College until June of 1944. He graduated from Navigation School as a 2nd Lieutenant in Monroe, LA in June of 1945 and was discharged in January of 1946.
Mr. Adam farmed in 1946-47, worked for International Harvester in Monroe City 1948-53, drove a Standard Oil truck 1953-57, worked as a door-to-door salesman in Columbus, OH in 1957 and finally worked as a tool and die maker at Kuhlman Diecasting in Monroe City from 1957 until he retired in 1991.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church where he was active as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Greeter and member of the Knights of Columbus for over 70 years including Grand Knight at St. Stephens Parish. He played softball until retirement, loved to play golf and enjoyed traveling. He also coached little league baseball for over 20 years and was an avid Cardinals fan.
Survivors include his wife, Lorena (Rusty) Adam; one daughter, Rebecca Kellerman (husband Mark) of Hays, KS; four sons, Kenneth (wife Ana) of San Diego, CA, Harold (wife Donna) of Tulsa, OK, Phillip (wife Susanne) of Costa Mesa, CA and Paul (wife Leslie) of Wexford, PA; one brother, Martin Adam (wife Charlotte) of Quincy, IL; 10 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, five step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren (listed below). Other survivors are brother-in-law Don Farnan of Sunrise, FL and sister-in-law Lois Farnan of Marysville, MO along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Adam’s grandchildren are Laura Geritz (husband Robb), Chris Adam, Joshua Adam, Miranda Adam, Shawn Adam (wife Anissa), Kristen Adam, Nathan Adam, Michael Kellerman, Brian Adam and Andrew Adam.
His great grandchildren are Alex Adam, Kaylie Adam, Madison Adam, Taylor Adam, Bella Adam, Lorelei Adam and Malachi Adam. Step Grandchildren: Summer Warren, Joshua Sternberg and Therese, Mikaela and Johan Svensson. Step Great Grandchildren: Carey Adam, Luvisa Conrad, McKenzie Reed and Savannah, Sadie and Samuel Warren. Honorary Grandchildren are Paul Hancock, Karen (Hancock) Kendrick and Katy Hancock.
His parents, five brothers, John Paul, Melvin, Harold, Glennan and Howard and four sisters, Margaret Yager, Lucille Thomas, Theresa Hall and Helen Maher, preceded Adam in death.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14 at the Holy Rosary Church, Monroe City, Fr. Mike Penn officiated the burial in the Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Visitation was the evening of Sunday Sept. 13 from 4-8 p.m. at the Garner Funeral Home, Monroe City. D of I recited the Rosary at 3:45 p.m. and the Parish held a scripture service beginning at 7:30 p.m.
