Blake Hays, Zach Osborn and Bryce Stark play offennse against Christian Living Word during sectionals held at the Moberly Area Community College on Feb. 28.

The Monroe City Panthers traveled to Moberly on February 28 to compete in their first sectional game of the season. The game was set to be played at the Moberly Area Community College at 7:45 p.m. against Living Word Christian School. Despite the Panthers efforts they would fall short with a score of 30-47.
Head Coach Brock Edris commented, “During the first quarter Christian showcased their quickness and athleticism and were able to beat us off the dribble to the rim. We made adjustments and were able to better contain their athletic guards the rest of the game. We went into halftime down 17-20 after giving up a 3-point buzzer beater. Our team struggled shooting the ball in the first half but we were pleased with only giving up 20 points. Unfortunately, Christian came out in the second half and made back to back 3 point baskets to extend their lead to 9 points early in the third quarter. We weren’t able to overcome the deficit as Christian went on to win 47-30. If you would have told me before the game that we would only give up 47 points, I would have felt good about our chances to win the basketball game. However, when you shoot 24% from the floor it’s going to be a long night for your team. With that being said, our team had a terrific season. We finished 24-5 overall and tied for 2nd in the CCC. We won the Clopton Tournament Championship and became champions of the Class 3 District 8 tournament. This was the first time the boys program has won back to back district championships since the 1995, 1996 seasons. We are extremely proud of what our players accomplished this season. After losing so much to graduation last season, our team didn’t make excuses and set out to be the best team they could be.”
