Monroe City Black and Gold Concert Band earned a “1” or Exemplary rating at State Contest for Large Ensembles this past Friday March 24th at Hannibal LaGrange University. The Exemplary rating is the highest rating for ensembles. For music educators at the high school level,
this is considered the State Music Assessment. The band performed two

Following the performance of the prepared pieces, the band sight-read a piece that is not available commercially and was commissioned specifically for the Missouri State High School Activities Association Large Ensemble State Music Festival. In the sight-reading portion, the students have a six minute instructional period in which the may view the comissioned piece, apply their system of counting, key signatures, sizzling, and then play the piece immediately following the instructional period.
